About

Rutland Catholic Schools is part of an emerging reorganization among Catholic schools nationwide. Catholic education faces many of the same challenges as our public counterparts including rising costs, the continuing development of relevant coursework, and keeping our learning environments safe. One response on the part of many institutions, secular and non-secular, is to consolidate common functions—administration, marketing, purchasing, information technology, and finance to name a few—as a way to both reduce the cost of overhead as well as to create a more efficient and effective use of often limited resources. That’s certainly the case here in the Rutland area where both Mount St. Joseph Academy and Christ the King School duplicate many of these functions.

Following through on the recommendations of the recent report by Catholic School Management, Bishop Matano, priests from throughout the diocese, and members of the parish council enthusiastically supported the concept of combining the respective boards of the two schools into a single, more streamlined governance model with an eye towards consolidating a number of important functions. The first step in this process was the selection of new Board of Directors that will be chaired by local businessman, Peter Giancola. The Board has many tasks ahead of it but the most immediate is the development of the vision for the new organization followed by the development of the strategic plan.

The immediate goal is to have the Rutland Catholic Schools fully functioning by the beginning of the 2009/2010 school year and to spend the time until then laying a sound foundation for the growth and development of Catholic schools throughout our region. This is the first step in what should prove to be an exciting and rewarding—as well as challenging—time in the long and storied history of Catholic education in our region, in our state, and across the country.
